چکیده

Outlook following "somnolence syndrome" after prophylactic cranial irradiation The "somnolence syndrome" consists of drowsiness, lethargy, anorexia, and irritability occuring in about 600% of children six weeks after prophylactic irradiation of the central nervous system in acute leukaemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.1 It is associated with electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities.1 We have studied 27 children prospectively to evaluate EEG changes occurring in children after irradiation of the central nervous system. We have also attempted to correlate the occurrence of the syndrome with the fractionation of radiotherapy and with the subsequent survival and well-being of the children.

Somnolence after prophylactic cranial irradiation in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

A transient cerebral disturbance characterized by somnolence of varying degree is described in children after cranial irradiation given as part of central nervous system (C.N.S.) prophylaxis for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in remission.Out of 28 such children receiving cranial irradiation as part of the Medical Research Council protocol for C.N.S. prophylaxis 11 (39%) developed pronounced sym...

Somnolence syndrome after cranial irradiation : a literature review

Somnolence syndrome is a commonly seen, early-delayed side effect of radiation treatment to the brain. Despite being a recognised side effect for over 30 years, many associated aspects of the syndrome are still unclear, such as which patients are most prone to the condition, what are its associated symptoms, what is its aetiology, what treatment factors affect it and how can it be managed? Lite...

Somnolence syndrome in patients receiving radical radiotherapy for primary brain tumours: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To characterise the incidence, pattern and severity of post cranial radiotherapy somnolence and to identify factors predictive of frequency and severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy consecutive patients receiving radical cranial irradiation were prospectively assessed for somnolence at baseline, during and up to 10weeks following radiotherapy using five variables scor...

Prophylactic Radiotherapy in Acute Lymphocytics Leukemia of Children

The concept of CNS preventive therapy in childhood all is based on the assumption that undetectable CNS leukemia is present in most patients at the time of diagnosis, residing in that "sdnctuary site" protected by the blood-brain barrier from cytotoxic concentrations of most systemically administered antileukemic agents. Studies in the 1960s demonstrated that administration of 2400 rad cranial...

Perihippocampal metastasis following hippocampus-avoiding prophylactic cranial irradiation for small cell lung cancer: a case report

Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) lowers the risk of brain metastasis (BM) and increases survival in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients, but it also entails a risk of neurocognitive dysfunction (NCD). One strategy to mitigate this neurotoxicity is hippocampus-avoiding (HA) whole-brain radiation therapy, as the hippocampus is mainly responsible for radiation-related NCD and hippocampal ...
